On memories of tastes and smells

memories of yesteryear
bring to the soul the unbidden tear
and to the heart an ache.
oh what I would give
for a fresh haefelli's cake
but no I dream in technicolour
of an era far away
of a time and place so distant
yet was it not today -
a moment ago -
I tasted once again
the smell of the driven rain
as it fell on the hot matabele land
and the marula's sweet tang
did bite my mouth?
ah so many lanes to traverse
crannies to explore
this page is the key
which opens that door.
